Port Hedland

The Big Wheel Barrow at Wedgefield, Port Hedland's industrial area. A dump truck bucket from the old days at Mount Newman Mining Co.

The Esplanade Hotel in Port Hedland. In the right of the photo is the new port control tower under construction.

The view from the boat ramp in town. In the background is a Bulk Carrier waiting to be loaded with Iron Ore, berthed at BHP Billiton's Finucane Island Port Facility. Finucane Island is forms the western bank of the harbour entrance.

The Port Hedland "Skyline" from Cemetery Beach Park. A mixture of stackers, reclaimers and ship loaders.

Rio Tinto's Dampier Salt operations at Port Hedland. Dampier Salt uses evaporation to harvest the Indian Ocean's sea salt. From the air, the lake system is quite impressive.

Finucane Island boat ramp. This is on the inlet side of Finucane Island. Offers protected water in most conditions. The cross current from large tides can make the ramp difficult to use at times. Fantastic facilities though.

Marapikurrinya Park is at the end of the Main Street in Port Hedland, it is a shady spot to watch the ships come and go through the harbour. It is right next to the towns public jetty which is a popular fishing spot. The park also has a popular kids playground too.

The Town Jetty otherwise known as the Public Jetty. This photo was taken on a high tide but the jetty is multi level and offers a good fishing spot on any tide. On the far side of the harbour is 3 iron ore bulk carriers, berthed at BHP's Finucane Island facility. The centre one is in the process of being loaded.
