Streaky Bay to Adelaide

Image
On our last night at Streaky bay we discovered that the International rules game was on at Adelaide oval the following afternoon. For those of you that are not aware of what this is, it is International Rules Series that is a hybrid between Australian Rules Football and the Irish game, Gaelic Football. The International Rules Series is a two game series held each year between a team of AFL players and Gaelic Football players. It sounded too good to miss so we had a late night packing up in preparation for the 8 hour drive early the next morning. We had a 5 AM start and were on the road quite early. We dodged a few 'roos between Streaky Bay and Poochera but apart from that it was an uneventful trip, until... During a routine pitstop it became aware to us that the wheel bearing issues we faced in Geraldton had resurfaced. The grease that was in the bearing that had the faulty seal had overheated and we were not able to clean it out at all. We just attempted to pack new fresh grease

Esperance to Steaky Bay

Unfortunately we didn't spend too long in Esperance. It seemed like a nice place and we had heard plenty of good things about it but we needed to make a mile and start chipping away at the Nullarbor. The first night we free camped in a rest area 15kms east of Balladonia Roadhouse. Having fuelled up in Norseman (start of the Eyre Hwy) I had figured that if I "splashed and dashed" to borrow a motor racing term at Balladonia I would only have to get 1 proper re-fuel on the Nullarbor in an attempt to avoid the high remote area fuel prices. Our one major fuel stop was Border Village Roadhouse before reaching "civilization" at Ceduna. The " " might be a touch harsh on Ceduna, it seems like a really nice spot. The roadhouse has everything you would need after a long drive across the Nullarbor like Hungry Jacks, Subway and a HUGE array of deep fried goodness in the bain-marie, oh they also sell fuel and have showers.  Be kind rewind - This leg of

Perth to Esperance

We left Perth at the crack of late morning and headed south. First stop was Mandurah for fuel. We continued on to Bunbury where we found a really good bakery. We loaded up on lunch and got some nice fresh bread to take with us and headed to Busselton. We wanted to walk the famous Busselton Jetty but on discovering that they charge you $4 just to walk on public property we decided that they were taking the piss and refused to pay it. We spent the entire drive to Margaret River ranting about the ridiculousness of charging just to walk a pubic jetty. Margaret River We didn't spend much time in Margaret River, was a bit too touristy and yuppie for our liking. We thought we might like to go out for dinner but after looking at all the menus online we decided that nothing seemed to suit what we were after. We stayed one night at the Margaret River Tourist Park, the park was pretty good. Zero complaints other then we found the site quite small but I think this was due to us checki

Geraldton to Perth/Fremantle

While in Geraldton we visited the Geraldton Museum. It was one of the most interesting museums we have been to. There was an area dedicated to recovered relics from shipwrecks. There was a case full of silver coins that had all been found around the same area and was known to divers as the silver carpet. We learnt a lot about the HMAS Sydney and the Batavia. We took the coastal road down all the way too Lancelin before realising we needed to find somewhere to camp. So we headed east where we knew we would find a rest area on the Brand Hwy. We camped in a rest area 10kms north of Gingin on the Brand Hwy. We gathered some firewood and had a nice campfire for the night. The next morning we were up early to make a run into the city, Perth that is. We booked in at Discovery Parks Caravan Park at Forrestfield. We made it to Forrestfield where we ditched the camper trailer and headed for Fremantle. We wandered Fremantle markets, feeling more like pinballs getting bumped around then pe
